Bronson Sainsbury, Yass Rams Rugby President and Manager is happy with the start to the Rams preseason, with the club trialling well against some quality opposition.
The Rams are gearing up for a strong season and have already taken on the Leeton Phantoms in what turned out to be a physical match where there wasn’t much between the two sides on the scoreboard.
Bronson said, “Numbers have been really solid this year with good numbers in both. We have had an influx of new ladies coming along to the women’s team. We are travelling along pretty well at the moment.”
Although a solid increase has been seen in ladies’ numbers, it is difficult to put a 15 a side squad together with reserves, which will likely mean the ladies will boast a stronger tens side.

“It will definitely help. I think 15-a-side is probably a couple of years away yet, but I think they will be a lot stronger this year in the ten-a-side comp.”
“We are training Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm. Although we have separate squads we tend to do all our fitness together and then split off into men’s and women’s to do the drills, ball skills and that type of thing.”
“We had a trial two weeks ago out at Hall against Leeton. It was at Hall as there were no grounds in Yass as our ground is a cricket field at the moment and Walker Park has closed at the moment as they are doing some maintenance work. It’s pretty rough timing for us but it has to be done before footy season and after touch and there’s not many options there.”
“It was a pretty competitive game. Leeton has a lot of Pacific Islanders in their side and they played very well.”
“It was six tries to four to Leeton. It wasn’t a super serious game, in terms of the contact, it was a pretty solid sort of game, but it was a break-away try sort of thing, not a bust ourselves to stop that. It was we’ll fix that on the next one.”

“We have another trial this weekend at Boorowa and we play half a game against Boorowa and half a game against the Albury Steamers. It will be two tough games and the ladies team has the same trial as well.”
The club will give the Beer and Rugby Festival a miss this year as they look at different options preseason on 2025.
“We aren’t going to play in the Boorowa Beer and Rugby Festival this year as we will have had two trials already.”
“I think we get a few hard games to play early and really get into it and really test ourselves and hit the ground running.”
“We take on ADFA in the first round on April 5 and they were pretty competitive last year and we want to get ourselves in a good spot and start strong.”
“ADFA change from year to year depending on their in-take and they have two teams in the suburban comp as well. The team in our competition is essentially their first grade and they always seem to be pretty competitive.”
“ADFA just missed out on the finals last year and the year before they went very close. They are always up there.”
