What a terrific way to end the 2024 Polocrosse year. We held a small practice/trial of the new (old) playing grounds, followed by the AGM, Presentations and BBQ Christmas party.
The centre of the track has been sown down and cut for hay and now provides a good level playing surface. Several members of the Club took the opportunity to bring out some young horses to trial the fields.
There was a great roll-up, and the overwhelming feedback was excitement and: “When can we run a Carnival here!”.
The 2024 Club Presentations included the following awards:
Encouragement Award – Elliott Hughes and Levi Bayley
Most Improved Junior – Lizzie Scarlett
Most Improved Player – Jess Foster
Sportsmanship Award – Amy Glasgow
Best Presented Horse – Cath Bennett and Bengoran Eko
Most Improved Horse – Bengoran Smiley – ridden by Gael Beaufils
Best Junior Horse and Rider – Cameron Clark and Chyenne
Best Female Horse and Rider – Rachel Hughes and Bengoran Transit
Best Male Horse and Rider – Callum Hughes and Berragoon Appeal
President’s Award – super duo – Aimee Power and Bec Hughes.
The Presentations back at Marchmont also provided the opportunity to bring out the old silverware, with the Cavan Cup and Demestre Cups being polished for the occasion. These beautiful old trophies date back to 1955, so it was quite special to be able to bring them “home”.
Polocrosse practice days will now be held at Marchmont from the new year, with the aim to hold the annual carnival at Marchmont in 2026. By this time, it is hoped facilities, including water for horses and participants, will be available.
All in all, it was a big thumbs up and a great homecoming. If the number of kids attending the party is anything to go by the future of the Club and the grounds are looking very secure.
