On February 23 the Yass Railway Museum will host from 10:00am until 2:00pm the Yass Valley Volunteer and Community Expo. Entry will be completely free.
Yass Rotary and Yass Railway Museum are welcoming family, friends and neighbours to the event looking to encourage them to join a local group, support the community and volunteer. You will have the chance to meet locals, learn about local services, discover ways to get involved and make a difference.
Mandy Carter of Yass Rotary said it will be both a fun and informative event.
“The event is a volunteer community expo for the Yass Valley for 20 organisations. Unfortunately due to limited space available at the Railway Museum we had to cap it at 20, but I’ve had over 20 enquiries and plenty of interested people that support the community. It’s an opportunity for Yass Valley residents whether you are long term or new to Yass and want to find out about what organisations are here and what they do and what services they provide. It’s an opportunity to have face to face conversations with people.
“As far as I am aware I’m not sure that we have ever had anything like this in Yass before.
“Sam has been great to work with at the Railway Museum. She gives full support. It is running in conjunction with the markets that they have there once a month on a Sunday and I know that she gets about 500-600 people through the gates each market. Initially when we were looking for somewhere to go, I thought it had to be somewhere where people are already attending and they have time to have conversations and it’s a day that people aren’t working.
“It’s been great working alongside Sam, she’s been great, really supportive and she has a great area up opposite Aldi. We will be in the top corner away from the markets in a separate area and all our organisations will be lined up there together. There will be Yass Valley Aged Care through to Can Assist, Lions, SPIN, Red Cross, Hospital Auxiliary, Yass FM – organisations in Yass that rely heavily on volunteers.
“Yass Valley Aged Care will be there also answering questions about the services that they provide in regards to respite and support that they provide in the aged care sector in Yass.
“Even if you just want to come down and thank a volunteer, it would be nice to see local residents there having conversations and if the time isn’t right for you to volunteer, to show your support, come down have a conversation and know what services are in town and what great work has been done in town.
“We have organisations from the regional villages like Bookham, Bowning, Murrumbateman, Binalong, all the little areas inclusive of the Valley.”
