On February 25th, Yass SPIN members and volunteers came together to help clean up pinecones and other debris that litters the Yass Showground in preparation for the Yass Show on Saturday the 15 March.
New President of SPIN, Carly Scanes, said she is grateful to the Show Society to allow them use of the Roundhouse for a couple of exciting events coming up this year. She stated that it is a pleasure to assist the Show Society with a clean up in return for their events.
“The SPIN Foundation utilises the Showground for some of our events during the year and we offered to give a hand to the Show Society to do a clean up and give a few of our volunteers. I know they are a struggling society as well, so it gives them an opportunity to get some help and they had a massive working bee on the weekend just gone,” she said.
“We had 15 plus volunteers for the afternoon and it was so hot as it was 36 degrees. We have a really good group of people in SPIN and we just got in and picked up all the pine cones and put them in a trailer and the Show Society looks after that.”
“It gives us another opportunity to get together as a group and do what we do best. The Show is something that we definitely have to try and hold on to, especially for our community as some of our community events are starting to dwindle. People are just so time poor and they just don’t get the opportunity to do it, but I think it is something that our communities thrive on. It brings people to work for the town and it also gives especially small vendors like stall holders the opportunity to make some money and support their families.”
“With the cost of living the way it is, a lot of people are struggling, so it gives the opportunity for people to have an outing with their family and see what our community is involved and see what happens in Yass. She said the SPIN Foundation has been working hard. They had a small break last year due to the cost of living making it hard for the members to make such commitments.”
“This year we are trying to do something for Mother’s Day. So watch this space for Mother’s Day. We are looking at possibly doing a high tea, which will be awesome because everybody loves a good scone. We are hopefully going to have our hill walk again. There’s a sportsman’s lunch in March which SPIN is also doing in conjunction with the Yass Magpies.”
“There also a few other things happening. We are always busy, always doing something, always cooking a barbecue somewhere or helping someone out wherever they need some help. I love being part of the SPIN Foundation, even prior to being President, it is something that gives me a lot of gratitude for the amazing community that we live in. There are so many amazing and generous people and to be a part of an organisation like SPIN.”
“I’m proud to be the President. It’s a great group and we are always looking for volunteers, so if anybody wants to be a part of it, come along, come and see what we do, and we support so many people in our community which is something that we need to do. We need to stick together and make sure people are looked after. Get along to our events and enjoy what we have to offer. If anyone is looking at doing some volunteering in the community, get along to one of our events and enjoy what we have to offer. We have a Facebook page or drop us a line and we will get you involved.”
