Schools across Yass Valley have celebrated Book Week in style, with Mt Carmel, Berinba, and village schools dressing up for a Book Week Parade and Yass Public opting for a fun day of blanket forts and reading. Among the costumes were many young wizards, a pair of Bananas in Pyjamas, ‘Thing One’ and ‘Thing Two’ from Dr Seuss and a very creative wearable cardboard army tank.
Mt Carmel students Abby McEvoy and Anabella Nagle also had coordinated costumes coming as Trevor and Pig from Pig the Pug. Berinba students had many creative costumes, including Crayons and a Lego man. Parents and family were involved in the parades and came enthusiastically to see the children and join the fun.
Mt Carmel Kindergarten student Rafaela Tapia-Jeffrey had a beautiful costume from her book ‘Su Majestad Chiquitita’ written in Spanish. Classmate William Rothwell came as the Man from Snowy River, and the Kindergarteners proudly held up their books with teacher Mrs Jaclyn Green. (Photo at top)
Teachers went all out for the fun costume day as well.
‘I love that you get to dress up, my teachers are funny as well. I wasn’t expecting Mrs Luckie to come as a cop!’ said Mt Carmel student Megan Lymbery, dressed as ‘Adria’ from Girl Gladiator.
‘The children get so much out of a day like this,’ said Mt Carmel Teacher-Librarian Mrs Evelyn Turner.
‘Of course a lot of books and storytelling. We build up to it; we study the books. Each class has a book from the Book Council of Australia to study and create a display, which goes to the library. It’s a celebration of literature,’ she explained.
Binalong Public School teamed up with the local preschool to hold their Book Parade down the village streets, with many great costumes on display. Kindergarten, year one, and year two students made the trip to the Harden Library to participate in even more Book Week activities.
Over at Yass Public School, teachers organised a different spin on Book Week celebrations. Students brought in blankets, torches, and a favourite book, transforming classrooms into a child’s haven of blanket forts and dens. Students snuggled up with pillows and enjoyed their favourite stories. Among the book choices were Where’s Wally? and Dog Man.
