Yass Roos Recognised at AFL Canberra Awards

Despite losing last fortnight’s AFL Canberra Fourth Grade Grand Final, the Yass Roos Club has a reason to smile after the AFL Canberra Awards.

Sam Williams, Darcy Paine and Jenene Forlonge from the Roos were all recognised for their achievements throughout the 2022 season at AFL Canberra’s night of nights.

Williams won this season’s leading goalkicker award in the Fourth Grade competition, slotting 42 goals for the royal blue and white.

Although not registering a major in the Grand Final against Murrumbateman at Phillip Oval last week, Williams managed to collect bags of goals throughout a superb campaign, including kicking two crucial goals in the preliminary final against the Goulburn Swans.

Paine also featured heavily in the territory-wide awards ceremony, finishing second in this season’s Fourth Grade Best and Fairest.

Paine compiled a consistent campaign throughout the home and away season, only coming runner-up to the eventual winner by a singular vote.

The Roos silky number four, Paine backed up his form from 2021 where he went home with last season’s Best and Fairest crown, being adjudged the best player in the league.

Jenene Forlonge was also recognised on the night for her outstanding efforts for not only the Yass Roos Football Club but for AFL in Yass as a whole.

Forlonge was awarded the AFL Canberra Volunteer of the Year award for her tireless efforts, which encompasses all ages and grades.

The award carries huge regard in not only the AFL Canberra landscape but the sport of AFL as a whole, and for her achievement, Forlonge will now represent AFL NSW/ACT in the national awards later this year.

Well done to Sam, Darcy and Jenene for your fantastic achievements not only for the Yass Roos Football Club but for the competition and community as a collective.
