Yass Polocrosse Club stunning start to 2021 season

This weekend ( 13th / 14th March) will see the Yass Polocrosse Club head to Braidwood Carnival.

After 12 months off the field due to COVID, the Yass Polocrosse Club started off the 2021 season with a bang at last weekend’s Moss Vale Carnival on 6th / 7th March.

Perfect weather, the green fields of the Bong Bong Racecourse, combined well with the chance to catch up with friends once again, and we came away with some great results for the Yass Club.  A perfect start to the 2021 season.

While our numbers were down a little, we managed to field two and a half teams and several sub juniors. The Yass teams featured strongly in the team and individual prize winners.

Yass 1 defeated Burradoo to take out the A Grade Mixed Competition, with the team comprising Julia Frean, Kristy Huey, Rachel Hughes, Ryan Slater, Mick Barton, Paul Frean.

Kristy Huey certainly showed she had not lost any form after having had a few seasons off to complete her nursing training.

And Ryan Slater and his horse “Arch” were on fire, taking out the Best Intermediate (under 21 years) Horse and Rider of the Carnival and the Hal O’Donnell Memorial Shield.

Not to be outdone by the blokes, Julia Frean, riding “Bengoran Eko”, won the Best Woman Horse and Rider of the Carnival.

The B Open Competition was hotly contested with almost all the games going into extra time to get a result in the round-robin.

The Yass 2 B Grade Open side, which included 2 junior girls, Olivia Erland and Rainer White, who were well captained by Katie Yeo, with Drew Morton, Andrew Huey and Michael Gorman making up the rest of the team.

Three 3 Yass players and 3 from Wollondilly made up a third Yass side in the B Grade Open competition.

Final results were determined on a 3-way countback, with Yass 2 coming out B Grade Open winners and Yass 3 the runners up.

Not a bad start to the season.
