Hugh Rainger and Sally Butt smile for the camera at last years’ Picnic Races.
The excitement is building for one of the Yass region’s most beloved community events, the 124th Annual Windrose Yass Picnic Races, taking place on Saturday, 1st March 2025, at the beautiful Marchmont Racecourse. Anticipation is growing for one of the Yass region’s most cherished community events. With a proud history dating back to 1901, the Yass Picnic Races continue to offer a day of thrilling races, family fun, and vibrant community spirit. The racecourse is looking better than ever thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Yass Picnic Race Club committee and the Marchmont Trust, who have been working tirelessly on improvements to ensure a premier experience for all attendees.
“The work done at the Marchmont Racecourse is incredible,” says YPRC President Hugh Rainger.
“It’s shaping up to be one of the best race days we’ve ever seen. The grounds look fantastic and we can’t wait to welcome the community for a day to remember.”
Preparations for this year’s event are well underway, and the club is expecting a greater number of horses, jockeys and trainers than in previous years. Alongside the six thrilling races, the much-loved foot races for kids, men and women will also return, adding an extra layer of fun to the day. For those with an eye for style, this year’s Pateman’s Power Solutions Fashions on the Field is set to be a highlight. The event is being organised by committee Vice President Alison Jones, a seasoned competitor in fashions on the field events, both locally and internationally. “It’s such a wonderful way to celebrate individuality and creativity,” says Alison. “We can’t wait to see everyone dressed to impress.”
The AOne Earthworks Marchmont Marquee, known as the ultimate trackside experience, is already proving popular, with tickets selling fast. For $195 per person, guests can enjoy a fully catered three-course lunch, premium drinks, and the best views of the action right at the finish line.
“The Marchmont Marquee is where you want to be on race day,” adds Hugh. “It’s the perfect mix of great food, drinks, and prime location.”
A special thank you goes out to Windrose Property, the event’s major sponsor, as well as the race sponsors, including Elders, Robertsons Yass (Michael Abbey Memorial), EJ Merriman & Sons, Commence Communication, Offshore Boat Sales, Endeavour Meats, Waldren Group, and Yarrah Yass River.
Hugh is quick to highlight the vital role all our sponsors play in the success of the races: “Without their generous support, days like this simply wouldn’t be possible. We are incredibly grateful – thank you to everyone who has supported us this year.”
In addition to the races and marquee, attendees can enjoy a range of family-friendly activities, including face painting, clowns, and food stalls. Children under 16 enter for free, making it a perfect day out for families. Buses will also run to and from town, ensuring guests can relax and enjoy the day.
With marquee bookings closing on 13th February, the club encourages anyone planning to secure a spot to act quickly.
General admission tickets are available for $30 if purchased online, with gate prices set at $35. The event is BYO.
“The Yass Picnic Races are such an important part of our community,” says Hugh. “It’s not just about the races; it’s about bringing people together, supporting local businesses, and celebrating the traditions we hold dear. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone out at the racecourse for a truly special day.”
