Yass Valley Council workers have woken to discover several incidents of diesel theft from their heavy plant.
Stored on the roadside in the evenings while roadworks take place, it is understood that this is now an individual incident.
Council has expressed their disappointment online, saying, “The poor choices of a few impact our whole community.”
“These incidents create additional costs, downtime, involve trespass and provide inconvenience to not only staff but road users wanting to see road maintenance programs completed in a timely manner.”
The incident follows the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices after the Government’s fuel excise was eased off on July 1.
The excise, designed to assist everyday Australians who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, was introduced in March, with a 50 percent discount lowering the excise to 26.3 cents per litre.
As of July 1, the fuel excise will now only be discounted by 16 cents, with the excise on fuel rising to 36.6 cents per litre. This is in play for a month and costs are expected to continue rising.
Council has now issued a plea for anyone who witnesses theft or vandalism behaviour taking place, or for anyone who might have relevant information, to come forward and assist in investigations.
