A 29-year-old man has been charged after leaving police officers chasing him in an allegedly stolen vehicle down the Hume Highway for four days.
Officers from the Hume Police District Proactive Crime Team were involved with the investigation of the alleged theft of a vehicle from Helensvale, Queensland, on 20 July.
Two days later, on July 22, police allege then attended a shopping centre in Mittagong where he allegedly stole items from a supermarket before taking a gold necklace from a jewellery store.
It is alleged the man took the necklace (valued at approximately $11,000) with him in the stolen vehicle. It was then that police officers were able to identify the 29-year-old man responsible for the theft of both the jewellery and car.
At 6.45pm on July 24, another two days later, Traffic and Highway Patrol officers observed the allegedly stolen vehicle travelling north on the Hume Highway near Bowning at a speed well above the signposted limit.
The man failed to stop when directed to do so and local officers initiated a pursuit.
Continuing on for approximately 60 kilometres, the vehicle allegedly reached speeds exceeding 200 kilometres per hour in a 110 kilometre per hour signposted zone.
Due to safety concerns, the pursuit was terminated by police.
A short time later that same day, the stolen car was located unattended in a car park at Goulburn and upon police inspection, knuckle dusters and other property linked to the driver were recovered, along with the $11,000 gold necklace.
Following further inquiries, police found and arrested the alleged perpetrator on board a train at the Goulburn Railway Station.
The man was taken to the Goulburn Police Station, where he allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test for methamphetamine.
He was charged with multiple offences relating to the police pursuit, weapon possession, stealing offences and an outstanding arrest warrant.
Investigations continued after the man was refused bail and appeared before court on July 25, including pending forensic analysis of oral fluid symptoms.
