The Murrumbateman Community Association (MCA) has secured vital funding through the NSW Governments Community Building Partnership 2025 program to purchase a new tractor with various equipment for the mowing and upkeep of the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds. 32 hectares of the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds – Murrumbatemans only public multi-use recreation area – is maintained entirely by community volunteers, including our Menshed, under a formal agreement with Yass Valley Council. It hosts year-round activities including equestrian events, local sporting groups, community markets, running groups, dog walking, and is the home of the popular Murrumbateman Field Days.
In a letter of support, Yass Valley Council stated: Yass Valley Council relies upon the MCA to assist with the mowing and maintenance of 32 hectares of the Murrumbateman Recreation Ground under a formal agreement. The available mowing equipment is aged and not sufficient for this significant task.
The ability for small rural Councils to deliver better outcomes with less funding is limited and YVC appreciates community associations applying for grants to assist in improved infrastructure and maintenance of existing facilities in our region.”
The new tractor will allow safer, more efficient mowing – particularly during peak growing seasons – reducing fire risk, improving pedestrian access, and ensuring the grounds remain safe, usable and welcoming for the estimated 30,000 annual users.
MCA President Stephanie Helm said: “In small rural towns like ours, the community often has to step in where resources are limited. MCA has been maintaining a large section of the grounds since 2011 by volunteer labour.
“This new tractor will make a huge difference – not just in how we manage the space, but in encouraging more people to get involved. Its safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. If anyone in the community has ever thought about helping out, nows a great time – well provide the train-ing.”
