This week, Yass and Goulburn Police had three serious interactions with members of the public.
On Monday, 23 February, the Yass Highway Patrol detected a man travelling at 218km/h in a 100km/h signposted zone north of Yass on the Hume Highway.
Officers pulled over the sedan and checks revealed the 47-year-old had not held a valid driver’s license since 2009.
A roadside breath and drug test allegedly reported a positive result for both.
Arrested and taken to the Yass Police Station, the man returned a reading of 0.88 grams of alcohol and a positive result for cannabis and methamphetamine.
The driver was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, never licensed person drive vehicle on road and drive with mid-range PCA and illicit drug.
On Tuesday, 24 February, a man was charged after police seized more than $784,000 worth of cigarettes, tobacco leaf and vapes during a road stop in the state’s south.
The man (who was travelling with Victorian number plates), was pulled over on the Hume Highway.
Upon searching the vehicle, police sieved 293,200 individual cigarettes, 265kg of hard-pressed tobacco leaf and 2290 individual vape products.
The 58-year-old driver was arrested and taken to the Yass Police Station where he was charged with two counts of possess tobacco 50 or more commercial quantity and possess greater than 100 commercial quantity vaping goods.
On Monday, 23 February, during a roadside test, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a car in Goulburn and discovered 14 duffle bags of cannabis.
Weighing 147kg and holding an estimated street value of $750,000, the car occupants (two men aged 26 and 31 years old) were arrested and taken to the Goulburn Police Station where they were charged with supply prohibited drug greater than or equal to large commercial quantity.
