Jeir Creek Wines hit the sweet spot with this ripper Pinot Gris & owners uncork their big dreams for the winery

Sixty-Second Swirl by Brent Lello Yass Valley Times Wine Columnist

There’s a lot going on over at Jeir Creek Wines.  The new owners – Anurag & Divya Pandey – have huge plans to put JCW firmly on the regional gourmet tourism map, as a leading light ‘wine & food’ destination.

A fine dining restaurant with superb views, luxury boutique accommodation by the heart-shaped lake, an amphitheatre for concerts amongst the vines, and a golf course are all part of the new grand plan.  They’re also busy replanting parts of the vineyard with food-friendly varieties that are craved by consumers.  These will complement the existing well-matured vines.

One of the varieties hitting the sweet spot of Australian wine drinkers’ palates is Pinot Gris.  It’s a versatile variety, super food friendly but can also be enjoyed well chilled on a warm summer evening.  For these reasons, Pinot Gris is a big fridge favourite at Chateau Lello.  There are many great examples of this wine style in the Yass Valley region, and Jeir Creek Wines have produced a ripper with this week’s “swirl” – their Pinot Gris 2022.

This Pinot Gris blushes in the glass with bright, light apricot hues.  A swirl reveals aromas of freshly cut beurre bosc pear and florally fragrant orange blossom.  On the palate, it’s light yet luscious, with crunchy pear and apple flavours, delicate acidity and a lingering, slightly savory with a  food-friendly finish.

We enjoyed our bottle with a grilled teriyaki salmon and asparagus salad, which was a superb match.  You could also crack onto this with the Friday night fish and chips, a spicy Thai chicken salad, or neck it by itself after a long day at work.  I sourced my bottle from the cellar door, but you can also buy for $28 online on the newly revamped website here – https://jeircreekwines.com.au
