Hume District Police Start Winter Warmth Drive For Those In Need

Mrs Pauline Hall and her donations for the Hume Police District’s Winter Warmth Drive.

The Hume Police District are on the lookout for donations for their 2026 Winter Warmth Donation Drive and are asking the community to consider donating to help support members of the community in need.

The service is intended to help provide dignity, warmth and support for those most in need as the cool season progresses.

Seeking new winter items only, the Winter Warmth Drive is looking for sleeping bags, warm boots, socks, beanies, warm coats and winter clothing.

With any donation received, the Hume Police District say people are welcome to include a small message of kindness, noting how a few thoughtful words can help those in need feel supported, valued and not alone during what can be a difficult time.

Donations can be dropped off at the Young, Goulburn, Yass and Southern Highlands Police Stations until the end of June, and will be distributed through trusted friends and partner agencies who specialise in supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship across the community.
Every donation, they say, makes a difference.

From the Yass Community alone, the Winter Warmth Drive has collected six fleece blankets, seven fleece scarves and four small knitted scarves, two small knitted wraps, 19 packs of junior and school socks as well as four pairs of men’s work socks, baby essentials (including mittens, beanies and jackets), thermal gloves for both men and women, 11 handmade adult beanies, a large assortment of winter jacks and three sleeping bags that are suitable for cold conditions as seen within the district in winter.

Yass Police Station’s Inspector Cowell said, “The response from the Yass community has been outstanding.”

“These donations are more than just items. They represent care, compassion and a willingness to look after those doing it tough.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support shown.”

Current contributors to the Winter Drive include:
• Wrap with Love Inc – Margaret Reidy,
• Ladies Hub Group and Anglican Church Craft – Jenny Monkley,
• Janice Novak,
• Penny Buckmaster,
• Yass Valley Outdoor,
• Khub Store, and
• Pauline Hall (whose donation included a selection of handmade, knitted scarves and beanies).

All donations have been provided to St Vincent de Paul Society ahead of distribution to identified individuals, families and those in need across the community.

Although the Yass Valley has been experiencing above average temperatures since the start of winter, nighttime temperatures are dropping to low, single-digit numbers and are unsuitable for anyone in need to be without warm items (such as clothes, bedding and blankets).
