A man has been charged over a fatal crash occurring in the states south late last year. About 6.20pm Sunday 8 December 2024, emergency services responded to reports of a motorist being struck by an object along Burley Griffin Way, between Harden and Yass.
Officers from The Hume Police District were informed that the driver – a 49-year-old man from Canberra – was travelling east bound when a solar panel from a portable power station that was being towed west bound has dislodged, penetrating the windscreen and striking the man in the head. The man died prior to the arrival of emergency services. Three females travelling in the vehicle were uninjured; however, they were taken to Canberra Hospital and treated for shock.
The 32-year-old male driver of the vehicle towing the portable power station was not injured. He was taken to Harden Hospital for mandatory testing. A crime scene was established which was examined by officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.
Following extensive inquiries, the 32-year-old man was served with a Future Court Attendance Notice for drive unsafely loaded trailer causing death. The Church Point man is due to appear at Young Local Court on Wednesday 9 April 2025.
