This year marks a monumental milestone, the 125th anniversary of the Yass Picnic Races on Saturday the 28th February. A testament to its deep roots in local history and its evolution into a beloved family gathering that blends thrilling horse racing with picnic vibes, fashions on the field, and foot races for all ages.
Set against the backdrop of Marchmont Racecourse, the races have growninto a vibrant community spectacle, drawing crowds from across NSW and the ACT. The Yass Picnic Races trace their origins back to 1901, emerging during a time when the Yass region was buzzing. Communities sought ways to celebrate their pioneering spirit.
Over the decades, it has weathered wars, economic shifts, and even pandemics, maintaining its status as one of Australia’s oldest continuously running picnic race meetings. Under the guidance of a dedicated all-volunteer committee, led by President Hugh Rainger, the Yass Picnic Races have seen significant expansion in recent years. This has infused fresh energy, growing the event from a local affair into a regional drawcard with increased entries—more horses, trainers, and jockeys than ever before.
The committee’s focus on inclusivity has transformed it into a premier family day out, complete with shaded picnic spots, kids’ activities, and a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to all generations. The current committee members have been instrumental in coordinating the milestone celebrations.
Sally Butt, secretary shared her excitement: “Reaching 125 years is a memorable achievement —it’s a real reflection of the community’s love for a good social day out . We’ve stayed true to the core values of the event while evolving the day to ensure some financial stability and longevity for the community. We are eager to encourage past committee members to stay involved and enjoy the social side of the preparations. We are working hard with our sponsors to ensure they have a great day and that their business is return are well supported by the event and promoted accordingly.

Fashion on the field competitions bring a touch of elegance, while the six-race program keeps the adrenaline pumping and some extras this year with the addition of public bar and some post-race entertainment. Honouring 125 years of racing heritage while fostering community bonds in a fun, inclusive setting. It’s more than races—it’s a social hub where stories are shared, friendships forged, and regional pride celebrated.
THE CALCUTTA
The Picnic celebrations start on the Friday evening, 27th of February with a Calcutta at the Yass Golf Club commencing at 5pm with an Auction at 6pm. The Yass Picnic Race Club warmly invite all the Yass community to come along and get their race weekend started by forming a syndicate or individually an opportunity to purchase a horse in the Elders and EJ Merriman Cup, race no 5. No tickets will be sold previously and 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the local charity “Hand to the Land”.

Free shuttle buses will be running from town to the racecourse between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm, with return services from 6:00 pm until the grounds are cleared.
