Captains voted in

Yass High School has voted in a new student leadership team for 2021 and the Yass Valley Times is excited to introduce our next generation of young leaders to the wider community. Captains Chrissie Davis and Corinne Green along with Vice Captains Calvin Morgan and Jacob Garner secured their peers and teachers votes to represent and lead the school.

Speeches and elections were very different this year with eight senior students addressing their fellow students and staff using live streaming technology thanks to teacher Ian Munn and the Entertainment class.

The four students who received the greatest votes, irrespective of gender were then appointed to the positions of School Captains ranked 1 & 2 and Vice Captains ranked 3 & 4.

Captains Speeches

Hi everyone, my name is Chrissie Davis and I am running to be your 2021 school captain. Before writing this speech, I asked myself, what is a leader? I came across many analogies, quotes and definitions, but this one stuck with me best and I would like to share it with you:

‘Leadership is an action, not a position’.

We’ll come back to this, but for now, a little bit about me, although I want this to be less about me and more about what I can do to make a difference. I have been to Yass High since Year 7 and I am Oxley House Captain, and even though it was only for the swimming carnival, I know we would’ve been amazing at the Cross Country and Athletics carnivals. I have been in SRC for two years now and have taken part in many projects, such as the return and earn bottle bins. I have represented Yass High at many sporting, academic, and leadership events, such as regional and state sport and leadership camps.

In my time at Yass High, I have seen many captains come and go, and I realised that they all had one goal: to represent, serve and lead the school as one. They strive for change, even in the smallest ways, as it is the smallest changes that create the greatest influence. I believe in this change and the positive impact it can have on our school. This is why I believe I can be a voice for you. If elected for 2021, I will seek to create an even bigger impact.

To me, the school captain is not just someone who stands up on assembly with a blue blazer and carries the school captain title. They are a familiar, friendly face to all, and they allow everyone to feel welcomed. I will be this friendly face to you if elected or not.

If you choose me to represent you, I will seek to motivate each and every one of you to reach your full potential, and to help you solve and overcome any problems you may have. I will take on board any ideas you may have, big or small, to help improve our school together. I will be your voice, even if you feel you don’t have one – believe me you do, and it needs to be heard. These are the actions we need, rather than the positions we fill.

So as I stand for school captain today, I want you all to remember that I am not standing for myself; but rather for us all and for our school as a whole, and how we can make our school a better place together.

Thanks for listening, remember Vote 1 Chrissie and good luck to the other candidates.

____

Listen. Listening.

It is something so simple but, so few do it. We want our voices to be heard; we want to be seen but if people don’t listen it seems impossible. I am Corinne Green and I will listen to what you have to say. I know everyone is different, with different beliefs, different dreams, different hopes and different ways of life. Sometimes we need another voice to say, “I will follow you”. I have been this voice for many people over the years from my music to sports to academics. For years I have been the student in class that assists others when they need support.

What I want to assist you with is finding others that will support you and your interests and let me tell you if I put my mind to something, I will do it. I have set my mind onto helping you and I know I will do my best to achieve this no matter what. I want to help you find someone to talk to, to let you vent your ideas, your feelings, your emotions, and your breakthroughs.

I’ve always been known as the musical student, the one that plays the saxophone, the one that gets high grades. When I leave Yass High, I don’t want this to be my legacy, I want to have created an everlasting difference for students and teachers. I want to be someone that helps you and students of the future to stand up, be strong and show the world that you have so much to give. Because if we stand tall and together so does this school, and so does our community.

I want to help publicise sports, improve the music and arts department and give the mathematics, humanities and science students more opportunities to show their skills. We have a huge variety of students and talents throughout Yass High and I want to help you all express those brilliant part of you. I know all of you can do great things. I’ve seen it in your actions, in your words. I’m someone who strives to find the good in people and I have seen so much good and potential in all of you. So, show me, tell me what you aspire for in our school, in our community, in your life and let me help you get there. I will support you and listen to what you have to say and if I get this position or not, I plan on helping you no matter what. I just want to use this chance to get this message out to all of you.

I will listen, people will listen to you.

YHS school captains and vice captains for 2021 L-R Vice Captain Calvin Morgan, Captain Corinne Green, Captain Christie Davis, Vice Captain Jacob Garner and Year Advisor Sanae Panton
