Locals may have recently noticed new signage at the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds advising of a “No Camping” or “Overnight Stays” (including vehicles). Penalties, the sign says, apply for anyone caught doing so.
The new sign placement has caused quite a stir for Councillors and locals alike, and according to Deputy Mayor Kristin Butler, is an “unfortunate” error.
In response to a concerned resident online, Deputy Mayor Butler wrote, “There have been recent complaints of campers (in non-caravan style accommodation) camping close to the tennis courts, utilising the BBQ, drinking alcohol and harassing children through nets.”
“This motion in June was intended to review the camping at MBTN rec grounds and I had hoped this would decide appropriate designated camping areas.
“I am fully supportive of temporary camping on the other side of the oval (behind the fence line).
“It is unfortunate that the signs put up have caused confusion and have been done before the review has taken place.”
Councillor Alvaro Charry also weighed in on the issue upon receiving serval inquiries from locals.
“The intent of these new signs is not to prevent legitimate short-term camping associated with major community events such as the Murrumbateman Field Days, equestrian events and other activities held at the Rec Grounds,” he wrote.
“Those events are a vitally important part of the way this community space has traditionally been used.
“Rather, my understanding is that the signage has been installed in response to concerns about people camping for extended periods in the vicinity of the tennis courts and playing field.
“Following a collaborative discussion with YVC Exec, I believe there is an opportunity to develop a clearer approach that both addresses those concerns and preserves the Rec Grounds’ important role as a venue for major community events.”
Chair of the Sport and Open Space Advisory Committee, Councillor Fleur Flanery and Chair of the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds Focus Group, Deputy Mayor Butler will be leading the discussion moving forward, with assistance from Councillor Charry. Short term camping on the Recreation Grounds provides tourism opportunities to the local eateries from visitors to the region as well as ease of location for those attending local events, such as the Murrumbateman Markets, Field Days or sports events.
“I’ve been in touch with Deputy Mayor Butler, and we aim to work together with YVC staff and our councillor colleagues to workshop some ideas and develop a practical, common-sense approach that balances the needs of nearby residents with the flexibility the Murrumbateman Rec Grounds have always provided for community events,” said Councillor Charry.
