The newly rehabilitated Yass Valley Way was officially declared open on Tuesday, 2nd of March by Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman, Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey and General Manager Chris Berry.
The busy section of road linking the Barton Highway with the Hume Highway was identified for major upgrade due to the high volume of heavy vehicles and local traffic utilising the stretch on a daily basis.
The $1,855,580 project was jointly funded by the NSW Government under the Fixing Country Roads Program and Yass Valley Council.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the $543 million state-wide program is targeting projects that build infrastructure to support regional freight projects.
“Fixing Country Roads is all about moving freight more efficiently – this supports jobs, economic growth productivity of regional NSW by reducing the cost of getting goods to market,” said Ms Tuckerman.
Construction commenced along Yass Valley Way in September 2020, with the team from Roadworx undertaking upgrade works including widening, strengthening and sealing along the entire 5.2km stretch of road.
The wet summer season, which was enjoyed across the region, did pose some challenges for the team triggering slight delays, however, the project was delivered by mid-January 2021.
“Council is grateful to the NSW Government for the funding to assist Council to rehabilitate this significant stretch of local road. These works will improve transport routes and movement across the region,” said Mayor Rowena Abbey.
