Barton Estate’s newest team member presides over crates of this week’s winning wine – a six year old stunner!

Sixty Second Swirl by Brent Lello

Bob and Julie at Barton Estate are passionate about the vines they nurture and the wines they produce.  They also don’t mind having a crack at rare-bird wine varieties such as Petit Verdot.

Barton Estate – Vertical Petit verdot

Petit Verdot is one of the “Big 5” Bordeaux varieties but is way less common in this part of the wine world than its stablemates – Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  This week’s “swirl” – the Barton Estate Petit Verdot 2015 – is well worth seeking out.

For 6 years old, this is a rippingly youthful red.  The wine is a deep, dark red with purple hues along the edge.

For me, a swirl reveals beguiling aromas of dark cherries, mulberries, white pepper with a lift of crushed violets.

On the palate, it’s rich, ripe and luscious with a medium to full body. The flavours of ripe cherries and black forest fruit flavours with a hint of chocolate, well-integrated acid and fine tannins lead to a lovely, lively finish.

We enjoyed our bottle with fettuccini in a mushroom and blue cheese sauce.  The richness of the dish combined well with the lively, full-flavoured wine.

It would go really well with a tomato and red wine braised lamb shanks.  I sourced mine direct from the winery, and you can buy it for $30 online.

“Barton Estate will reopen at Cellar Door on the 30th October and we look forward to sharing all our new vintages
with you.

We are excited to release the 2017 Blanc de blancs; Chardonnay, Riley’s Riesling and the ever-popular Blue Rose- all from 2021, and the bold and beautiful 2018 Georgia Shiraz will be on the tasting bench!

Over lockdown, we have put together some “vertical” 6 packs of Riley’s Riesling, Georgia Shiraz, “Synergy”
Cabernets Merlot, and of course, Petit Verdot (pictured far right). This is a great way for you to get to know, or
reacquaint yourselves, with some of our favourite older vintages, and of course, they make an ideal Christmas gift!
