The Murrumbateman Eagles defeated the Batemans Bay Seahawks 7.7 (49) to 5.11 (41) in a hard-fought game in the Bay over the weekend.
Coach Brent Fraser said the Seahawks were off to a good start but he said to our boys, ‘if we can kind of keep grinding away opportunities will come.”
“I guess the whole game itself was a close one and it was a tough one,” he said.
“We had both sides have opportunities and it was just a real hard fought out game but glad to get the win.”
Brent said although they had the ball a lot in the first half, there were times the Eagles just weren’t able to capitalise on it, but they hung in there.
“There was a bit of rain, and the ground was heavy, and it was just a grind from both sides and it was a good physical [game],” he said.
“It was just a real hard-fought game right from start to finish.”
“One of our goals at the start of the year was to play consistent footy and start well and finish well.”
“Then obviously through the body of the game that we make sure that we play our way and stick with teams whether they’re the lowest or above us, so it was a really good consistent performance.”
“I think with Bateman’s Bay you just don’t know what you’re going to get,” he said.
“Coming to the Bay you’ve always got to be on your game, they are a side that can stick with you and they can pretty much bring you undone if you’re not on your game and if you’re not aware.”
“It doesn’t matter where they sit, they can be a surprise package and they are someone we don’t take lightly and full respect to them.”
Murrumbateman Eagles is up against ADFA Rams on Saturday, June 4 in a home game at Murrumbateman Oval.
“ADFA have been strong and at the moment I think with the competition so open, the results that we see can sometimes be like, ‘God that’s a surprise’, but you don’t take anyone for granted.”
“ADFA are just another side that we’ve got a lot of respect for and we know how they can play good footy and they’re fit.”
Brent said the match will be another good challenge and opportunity for the Eagles to hopefully get a win.
“We’re looking forward to playing ADFA at home and they’ve got a strong side but hopefully we can come away with the points.”
