Yass Police Report – Break & Enter while home-owners slept, shop theft & three vehicle crashes

Yass Police reported a series of updates throughout the previous week to the Yass Valley Times on the 21st of August, 2023, detailing Roadside Breath Tests, Drug Tests, crashes, fines, breaking and entering, and the Hume Police Department Awards Day.

 

Approximately 250 Roadside Breath Tests were conducted over the last week, as well as 6 Roadside Drug Tests. No reports have been made on positive results. 

 

A residence on Dog Trap Road was the victim of a breaking and entering on Friday the 18th, between the hours of 2:00 am to 2:30 am. The home occupants were awoken by the intruder, who reported hearing noises and saw a torch light. Upon being disturbed, the offender fled the home and was unable to be located. Investigations have commenced, with police urging anybody with information to please contact Crime Stoppers. 

 

Police are investigating an alleged theft from the Yass ALDI store, In which at 2:20 pm on Friday the 18th, a man was seen entering the store, before placing numerous items under his jumper and attempting to leave. While leaving, stolen goods fell from the man’s clothing, which were hastily recollected before fleeing the store. The offender then later returned, stealing more items.  ALDI staff and Police were notified through CCTV footage, with investigations underway. 

 

At 4:30 am last Monday, police were called to a crash scene along the Hume Highway/Bogolara Road in Berremangra, in which a vehicle left the roadway and careered through the centre median before coming to a stop. It was subsequently bogged in the median strip. The lane was closed for 2 hours during the salvage operation. 

Another crash was reported at 2:15 pm on Wednesday, in which police were called to a scene along the Hume Highway/Burley Griffin Way road in Bowning, in which a car towing a Caravan collided with a semi travelling from the North Hume Highway direction. The elderly couple driving the car were fortunately not injured, however, unfortunately, the truck driver was conveyed to Canberra Hospital with chest injuries. Police note that the driver took great evasive action to prevent a serious crash. 

 

Police are investigating a crash that occurred at 2:20 pm last Saturday along Grabben Gullen Road, in which a Canberra motorcycle rider was found on the side of the road by another motorist after a severe crash. The man was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in critical condition. Police are asking for motorists who may have travelled in that area and who may have dashcams to come forward, or contact local police or call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000. For those who may have been present in the area, the man was riding a grey Kymco Scooter. 

 

Police were called to a local venue in Yass at 10:15 pm on Saturday, where it is alleged there was a heavily intoxicated man, who was asked to leave and refused. Police escorted the man out. He was then issued a $550 fine. Inspector David Cowell notes that when patrons are asked to leave by venues serving alcohol, they “Must leave immediately after asked”. 

 

The Hume Police Department held an Awards Day back in July, where a number of Yass officers received awards for great efforts and contributions to the wider region.
