Yass Art group hopes to grow

Do you find yourself doodling on napkins or captivated by the colours of clouds at sunset? You might just be an artist at heart! A local social art group is seeking new members from absolute beginners to experienced artists.

“The Yass U3A Art Group is an opportunity to spend a few hours a week amongst congenial company with a like interest in doing some artwork,” said member Jay Sargent.

“We are all learning and help one another to progress. Beginners are very welcome. Borrow the grandchildren’s coloured pencils if necessary and come along.”

The Yass U3A Art Group has been meeting for over 15 years. We have all missed our get-togethers during this COVID period but are glad to say that now COVID restrictions have relaxed, the Yass U3A Art Group has recommenced its meetings, whilst conforming to all the COVID rules and regulations (distancing, cleaning etc.).

Ms Sargent advised the group meets each Thursday afternoon 12.15 – 3.15 pm at the Community Hall next to the Men’s Shed. The new term will commence on Thursday 8th October and the cost per term (coinciding with school terms) is $30 (or part thereof).

Members undertake their artworks in a variety of mediums – artist’s choice: watercolours, pastels, oils, drawing, acrylics.

The group advise they are from all walks of life, all ages, from artists who have been painting all their lives, to absolute beginners – everyone works at their own levels with no pressure and plenty of conversation.

There is a tutor on site most weeks, otherwise, members assist and support each other with plenty of interaction and guidance available.

Due to COVID normal provided refreshments have been replaced with BYO.

The Yass U3A Art Group had this to say to encourage others to join.

“Socially the Art Class is my highlight of the week”  –  “It’s a great opportunity to get out of the big smoke”

“The Class has made a difference to a lot of people’s lives”  –  “Sitting at home painting is not much fun”  –  It is good to have the class”

“Time goes quickly when you are doing your art”

“From the very first class, I felt comfortable and have been a member for over 5 years. I really enjoy our get-togethers and what I learn, and am very proud of what I can share with my family”

Art group in Yass hopes to grow in numbers to share their love of art and also cover costs of hiring the venue

For insurance purposes, the group advise you need to be a member of the U3A (ACT Hughes/Cook), a yearly membership which they will explain to you, but it will give you the additional benefit of being able to attend any of the many courses that the U3A ACT offer.

For more information – please phone Jay Sargent – 0438 515 052 (leave a message/text and Jay will phone you back) or Phil Cox – 6226 2372 or come along to a class and see if the group suit your needs.
