Whether through necessity or stylistic preference, winemakers in our region are increasingly waving their winemaking wands at grapes that are sourced from multiple regions. This is indeed the case with local producer Eden Road with this week’s Sixty Second Swirl – the Eden Road “The Long Road” Shiraz 2022.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyards near Gundagai and Lake George and the result is a carefully crafted cracker of a wine.
This Shiraz is a brooding plum red colour in the glass with a bright purple edge. A swirl reveals fragrant aromas of black cherry, black berry and ripe plums with violets, a crack of cool climate induced white pepper and allspice. The palate is smoothly seductive with ripe dark fruit flavours with a lick of food friendly acidity, silky tannins and a lovely, lingering finish.

We enjoyed our bottle on the household’s weekly Mexican night with spicy Mexican nachos and the bright food friendly flavours and texture of the wine complemented the food well. This wine would warmly welcome Moroccan spice inspired lamb cutlets, or a slowly braised lamb shoulder with a rich, tomato based sauce. I sourced our bottle from the local wine selection at BWS in Yass, but you can also source directly from the Eden Road cellar door or online for $30 per bottle here – https://edenroadwines.com.au/collections/red/products/2022-the-long-road-shiraz
