Sixty Second Swirl
To be honest, I had never heard of Luckenbach Wines until I visited the Yass Valley Information Centre and saw a bottle on their well-stocked racks.
According to the winery website, Mick and Marg from Luckenbach Wines craft “easy drinking, well balanced and well structured” wines from their small Murrumbateman vineyard.
This week’s “swirl” is a lovely, highly gluggable example of their work – the Luckenbach Cabernet Sauvignon 2017.
This wine is a deep and dark rose coloured red in the glass. A swirl reveals ripe black fruit aromas including blueberries, black currants and dark plums there’s a lift of fragrant leafy herbs. In the mouth, the wine is smooth, round and ripe with juicy dark berry fruit flavours and a sprinkling of cool climate spice.
This Cabernet is a delicious drop and fantastic value. We enjoyed our bottle with grilled eye fillet, but this would pair equally well with roast beef or a slow roast of lamb. Mick and Marg don’t operate a cellar door, but you can drop into Yass Valley Info Centre or buy online for $18.

“Our vineyard was established in 2003 with a view to making easy-drinking, well balanced and well-structured wines. We only have a small acreage of 1100 vines comprising Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
As a novice winemaker, I was looking for someone who was willing to make small-batch wines and Alex McKay of Collector Wines agreed to make this 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon for our brand.
Alex has also been of great assistance to me in my own winemaking efforts.
