A truck caught fire on the Hume Highway near Burley Griffin Way late Monday night but no one was injured.

The Yass Fire Brigade attended the scene and upon arrival found the driver of the truck attempting to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

Acting Captain Nick Whiting who attended the scene said the fire was likely caused by the truck’s engine getting too hot.

The rig was completely destroyed by fire but the driver was able to hop out of the vehicle before the flames took over. They were also reportedly assisted by people passing by.

Nick said they were concerned about the fuel tanks in a vehicle that size.

“We did have initial concerns that they might have been breached,” he said. “But in fact, they were still intact and they were fine.”

Nick described the fire as “pretty straightforward” and it didn’t take the crew too long to put it out.
