The 511 Yass Fire Station is looking to recruit more firefighters.
The firefighters will be on paid, retained recruitment, meaning they are not rostered on duty at the station, but instead considered “on-call” to respond to emergency incidents as they occur within the community.
With a current squad of 17 firefighters at the 511 Station, Captain Scott Lang said he would like an additional three people to join the team.
“Due to our zone, we are conveniently located and very deployable.”
“Having more firefighters increases our capability to assist the surrounding towns and aid those fighting major emergency bushfires,” Captain Lang said.
The recruited firefighters are paid a retainer for being on-call and then paid further based on the incidents they attend.
Due to the retained nature of the role, many members of the 511 Station are able to manage a second source of employment.
“We have members who work as police officers, paramedics, army reservists, as well as in hospitality and government.”
“What we are looking for are people with a good sense of team, looking to give back to their community,” Captain Lang said.
Once accepted there will be a station-based training program to prepare for the two-phased training course at one of the NSW Fire and Rescue regional training centres.
With ongoing employment comes the opportunity to develop skills and qualifications transferable to the wider working environment.
Applicants must be Australian citizens with a valid Australian driver’s license and must live near the fire station and have some weekday daytime availability.
