Breaking news: Suspected corona-virus transmission in Yass a false alarm

Concerns of community transmission of corona-virus after a Victorian woman visited Yass on Thursday and Friday have been declared as false by police.

Yass Taxis has returned to business as usual after suspending its day service on Friday until police advised there was no risk of transmission to drivers or passengers.

On Thursday night, the business had transported the Victorian woman and her partner to a motel in Yass after their car had broken down on the highway.

The woman was collected in Albury by her partner and crossed the border between Victoria and New South Wales lawfully, with a permit, Sergeant David Cowell of Yass Police Station said.

There was also no indication that the woman had tested positive for coronavirus, Sergeant Cowell said.

“The police have spoken to everyone involved and there is nothing to be concerned about,” he said.

Yass Taxis was informed on Friday morning by another local business owner that the woman had travelled from Victoria, a known hotspot.

Mr Cusack said he took action to protect his staff and customers as soon as there was the possibility of a coronavirus outbreak.

“We were relieved to hear it was a false alarm. Nevertheless, the taxis are routinely disinfected, and we have disinfected them again. Our customers can be assured that we will take every step to protect their safety and ours during these troubling times,” Mr Cusack said.

Yass Taxis will be back on the road after 4 pm.

There were 19,862 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Australia on Friday and 13,469 of those were in Victoria.
