Bookham’s very own lamb whisperer – Jacquie Kuiters

Many Bookham locals would agree that Jacqie Kuiters is one of the village’s unofficial local heroes.  Jacqie has an immense capacity to care for others whether the flock is a group of children learning Scripture, or sick and motherless lambs shakily starting out in life.

Born and bred in Sydney, Jacqie trained as a Social Worker coming to the Yass Valley in 1997 after a number of years in Alice Springs.  She was seeking what is now called “a tree-change” not realising that nearly 25 years later she would call Bookham home and choose it for her retirement.

As well as tending to her various flocks, Jacqie normally does a stint on Yass FM twice a month on a Sunday afternoon, volunteers with the Bookham Red Cross & Hospital Auxiliary as well as assisting with the international charity, CBM (Christian Blind Mission).           `.

One of her pet activities though is to mother the baby lambs of local graziers such as Dee and Ian Bush and Doug and Helena Painting.

As the local Lamb Whisperer, Jacqie’s flock currently numbers a dozen – some healthy at three months and others just trying to stand on their own frail four feet.  Her favourites include Sunflower, Tiny Mite, Curly and Diddums.

“It is wonderful to watch these little creatures survive and prosper,” she said.
