The Australian Defence Force have moved to Goulburn after joining forces with the Hume Police District last month to assist with welfare and compliance checks in Yass and surrounds.
Police Inspector Dave Cowell says the ADF are a resource throughout the Hume PD but at the moment Yass doesn’t have a great need for them due to the lockdown ending last week.
“The pure reason they were here was to assist with the welfare checks and COVID checking,” he said. “That was the only task they were doing.”
With 13 permanent staff in general duties at the Yass Police Station, the additional nine ADF personnel helped boost the stations numbers throughout lockdown.
The ADF have now been moved throughout the district and are currently assisting in Goulburn, but they may be missed in town.
The police inspector said it was a “very positive reception and even the community was very positive towards them as well, so that was really good”.
“We need to be doing the compliance checking and welfare, to check on those people and make sure they are doing the right thing.”
“Of course, we greatly appreciated their help,” he said.
On Monday the Southern NSW LHD recorded 21 new COVID-19 cases bringing the total cases in the region to 271 since the start of the current outbreak in June.
