A heartfelt message from the organisers of Yass Valley’s Pyjama Day fundraiser

Yass Valley Gets Comfy for SPIN Pyjama Day

Last Friday proved a perfect day of winter sunshine for the 2022 Pyjama Day, with many out and about showing off their dressing gowns and slippers. Yass Valley participated with great enthusiasm for a day to support the Yass SPIN Foundation. SPIN stands for Supporting People In Need and is a sub-branch of the Lions Club that financially supports patients with a range of medical conditions such as motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, heart disease, and more.

On Friday’s Pyjama Day, over $4000 was raised for SPIN,

with more money to be received and counted.

Over the course of the day, Lionel the Lion SPIN Mascot worked overtime visiting schools and businesses in the Yass community. Lionel visited all four Yass Town schools to take pictures with pyjama-wearing children, delighted the childcare centre and preschool children,  and even drove all the way to Binalong Public School, which took part in their first pyjama day this year.

SPIN dropped into as many businesses as they could, including the local cafes, pharmacies, gift shops, real estate agents, butcheries, supermarkets, and many more.

“Pyjama Day is all about involving the community, it’s as much of a fun day as it is a fundraiser. It’s a way of involving the community to all let their hair down and have a good time for a day,” said SPIN Foundation President Barry O’Mara. “We’ve been just about everywhere and we do apologise if we didn’t get everyone.”

Mr O’Mara pointed out three pyjama highlights of the day.

“The guys down at Luff Motors are great. A lot of the kids at the high school must have gotten into little groups to all wear similar pyjamas.”

This is the SPIN Foundation’s fourth pyjama day, having always run on the last Friday of July each year. The organisation explained that it is SPIN’s easiest fundraiser, which seems to organise itself, provided there is pre-advertising and schools are emailed in plenty of time to get it out into their newsletters. While they may play their efforts down, all of Yass appreciates the hard work all SPIN Foundation members have put into pyjama day and the great cause they raise money for.

“We’d just like to thank the whole community, particularly the business houses that get on board for this one,

it’s always been a bit tough with Covid and things like that,

but they’ve always been welcoming allowing us to come into the businesses,” said Mr O’Mara.
